Normalization to the peak or mean EMG amplitude during the task investigated

Normalization to the mean/ peak EMG amplitude from the task under investigation, usually obtained from the peak over trial, but not from MVC trials. One value is used, not a separate value from each trial. This method includes:

  • Peak or mean can be derived from data acquired separately from multiple trials, or from the ensemble average of the multiple trials.

  • All the muscles that have a potential involvement in the task, will be included in the synergy.

  • That method could potentially bias the synergy extraction toward a muscle with a consistently low activation level throughout the task; this is because its normalised EMG amplitude would be close to 1 throughout the task.

  • No information about relative activation level can be deduced by the weights of the muscles within each synergy.
